Fly Tying Thread

Sort by:

Thread is one of the few materials used in almost every fly you'll ever tie. It secures materials to the hook, builds the shape of the fly and, in some patterns, even becomes part of the finished body.

At Kindale Fly Fishing, we stock fly tying thread from trusted brands including Semperfli, UTC, UNI and Wisp. Each has its own strengths, so the best choice often comes down to the pattern you're tying and your own preference at the vice.

Fine threads are ideal for small dry flies and delicate nymphs where keeping bulk to a minimum is important. Stronger threads make it easier to tie larger flies, spin deer hair or secure heavier materials without worrying about breakages.

Different threads also behave differently. Some lie flatter on the hook, making smooth bodies easier to create, while others are naturally rounder and grip materials more firmly. With a choice of colours, sizes and breaking strains available, it's easy to find a thread that suits your style of tying.

If you're unsure where to start, we're always happy to help you choose the right thread for the flies you tie most.

What's the difference between denier and aught (8/0, 12/0 etc.)?

Denier measures the weight of the thread, while aught is a traditional sizing system. There isn't an industry standard for aught sizes, so an 8/0 thread from one manufacturer may be thicker or stronger than an 8/0 from another.

Which thread is best for beginners?

A good all-round thread is the best place to start. Many beginners choose an 8/0 or similar thread, as it's suitable for a wide range of trout flies without creating too much bulk.
